The Éru is a woodland liana known in France as "gnetum africanum." It is found in tropical and subtropical Asia, South America, and Central Africa.
The ÉRU is called differently in different countries. For example, in the French-speaking part of Cameroon, it is called Okok, and in the English-speaking part, it is called Eru. In Gabon, Angola, Congo, and the Central African Republic, it is called Koko. In Nigeria, some tribes call it Afang, and others, Ukazi.
But even though its name varies from place to place, this green plant with its hard texture because of their various virtues coveted. Whether culinary, medicinal, or cosmetic – the ERU is appreciated by all!
The plant is mainly valued and consumed locally, but is also exported from Cameroon, Gabon, Congo, the Central African Republic, especially Nigeria, and even to France, the USA and the United Kingdom.
The leaves of the Éru are considered a vegetable in the kitchen. They are often served with meat or fish, if not as a substitute. Otherwise, Éru are combined in a kind of stew with peanut paste and red palm oil. It is one of the most important ingredients in African regions and can be offered in both sweet and savory versions.
In addition, ÉRU is rich in nutrients as it has a high content of proteins, fiber and calories.
